There’s a new social media on the market for users who are growing tired of Twitter.
Threads launched today as an alternative to the Bird App. It was created by Meta and is being billed as ‘an Instagram app’. Perhaps the greatest advantage of Threads is how seamless it is to merge your Instagram account into a Threads account.
It’s as simple as downloading the app and (if you have an Instagram account) clicking a button that merges your profile information into your new Threads account. This means users don’t have to waste time setting up their profile and searching for all of the accounts that they had followed previously. With Threads, it’s all there instantaneously.
Ever since Twitter was acquired by Elon Musk last year, users have voiced their concerns with a number of changes the billionaire has implemented. Choices such as retooling the verification system such that anyone who decides to pay $8 per month can get the coveted blue check next their name have made it difficult to trust accounts.
Most recently, Musk rolled out a new feature that would put a cap on how many tweets a user could see in a day, although it seems like that change has been rolled back following the uproar that it caused among users.
As for Threads, only time will tell whether it will be able to replace Twitter as the dominant text-based social media.
One thing’s for sure though, it certainly makes the rumoured cage match between Musk and Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg a lot more interesting.
