Mounties are asking people not to take matters into their own hands after a series of incidents on Deer Island.
RCMP said they responded to a report of a disturbance at the ferry terminal just after 11 p.m. Tuesday.
“Throughout the investigation, it was learned that a vehicle was heavily damaged by a group of unknown individuals,” police said in a news release on Wednesday.
Shortly after midnight, there was a report of a structure fire at an abandoned residence on the island. Police said the fire is believed to be suspicious.
Then at around 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, police received a report of a theft of fuel at the ferry terminal.
“Police are actively investigating these incidents, and do not condone the public taking policing matters into their own hands,” said the RCMP release.
“Doing this puts themselves and others in their communities at risk, including someone being seriously injured or killed, or facing arrest and legal proceedings for their own actions.”
RCMP said they take all reports of crime seriously and investigate them thoroughly, adding investigations sometimes take time to ensure they have the evidence needed to support charges.
“We need communities and citizens to work together with us – legally and safely – in order to protect everyone,” said the release.
Social media posts allege the incidents were vigilantism related to thefts on the island, but RCMP would not say if that was the case.
Anyone who may have information on these incidents is asked to contact St. George RCMP at 506-755-1130 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
