Nova Scotia RCMP have found the body of a 52-year-old man who went missing on July 22 when his car became submerged as a result of the flooding over the weekend.
They have also discovered more human remains but have not been able to identify them yet. They are working with the Nova Scotia Medical Examiner’s office to positively identify the remains as soon as possible.
“Today is a terrible day for our province. I’m at a loss to understand a tragedy of this magnitude. I know Nova Scotians feel the same way… We can always rebuild roads and bridges and repair homes. We can never bring our loved ones back. These losses will be the legacy of these floods,” said Premier Tim Houston in a statement.
The man, a youth, and two children all went missing as a result of the floods and a massive search effort has been underway since Saturday to locate them including helicopters and search dogs. The man and the youth were travelling in a car together along with two other passengers when they took on water and had to escape. The two other passengers managed to make it to safety.
The two missing children were also travelling in a car that became submerged in the water. They were with three other passengers who escaped.
A multi-agency search is ongoing for those who remain unaccounted for. Crews are working to lower the water level in the primary search area in Brooklyn. Industrial and high flow pumping equipment continues to be utilized, with assistance from civilian contractors and the RMP’s partners. Multiple search and rescue teams are engaged.
Officials are asking residents to stay in their homes and to refrain from attempting to search for the missing people.
