New Brunswick will be installing new stop arm cameras on school buses around the province.
Officials made the announcement on Wednesday morning during a news conference in Moncton.
Working with Nova Communications, a secondary company to Rock Networks, the cameras will work to capture video of those who pass a school bus when the stop arm is extended and lights are flashing.
“During the school year, thousands of students board our buses to get to and from school,” Education Minister Bill Hogan said in a news release.
“Continuing and expanding our school bus camera program will make a significant difference when it comes to helping keep our students safe.”
Joe Hickey, president and CEO of Rock Networks, said they understand the importance of providing these cameras for school buses in order to ensure the safety of children.
“This will allow us to continue to expand the range of innovative communications solutions that communities rely on, while also helping to grow New Brunswick’s economy,” Hickey said in the release.
Service New Brunswick Minister Mary Wilson said being able to invest in the province’s private sector while supporting student safety is a win-win for all.
The province said it will invest up to $690,000 in the stop arm cameras.
