An Indigenous community in Fredericton has declared a local state of emergency over concerns about illegal drug activity.
Sitansisk (St. Mary’s First Nation) chief and band council made the announcement in a Facebook post late Monday.
“Our community is facing escalating risks due to illegal drug activity which endangers the safety and wellbeing of our citizens, particularly our youth,” said the post.
“In response, we are declaring a state of emergency to access additional resources through provincial and federal programs.”
The state of emergency follows a large disturbance that reportedly took place in the community over the weekend which led to a heavy police response.
Sitansisk is asking its citizens to stay indoors, keep children at home, and avoid gatherings.
“The next 48 hours are crucial in our effort to combat drug-related threats and secure a safer community for all,” said the Facebook post.
“It’s vital we unite to protect our community, especially our youth who are most vulnerable to these destructive substances.”
Sitansisk said local policing agencies will be assigning additional patrols throughout the community.
