Crisis hotlines help survivors of gender-based violence get the support they need when they need it most.
The federal government announced Friday that it has partnered with the province to provide financial support to crisis hotlines throughout New Brunswick.
They’re combining to give $700,000 in financial support to crisis hotlines from now until March 31, 2026.
The announcement was made by Marci Ien, Minister for Women and Gender Equality and Youth, who was joined by Sherry Wilson, New Brunswick’s Minister responsible for Women’s Equality and Jenica Atwin, Member of Parliament for Fredericton.
“Crisis hotlines are a lifeline for women and families fleeing violence because they serve as a connection to safe resources. This funding will help New Brunswick enhance the existing critical supports and services across the province and help people who are experiencing gender-based violence,” said Ien in a news release.
Crisis hotlines say a dramatic increase in demand during the COVID-19 pandemic and experts say that demand continues today.
Between 2009 and 2021, New Brunswick has been reported to have the largest increase in intimate partner violence against women and girls among the provinces, with a 39 per cent rise over that period of time.
The funding will help crisis hotlines provide services, resources, and supports to those experiencing gender-based violence and their families.
