Nursing students in at UNB will have more options to complete their degrees thanks to new funding announced today by the province.
The New Brunswick government is giving up to $487,000 to the school to help launch the brand new Learn Where you Live program. It let’s practical nurses working towards their nursing degrees spend the third and fourth years of their program working and studying from Mirimichi or Moncton. Previously, students would have had to spend all four years on campus in Fredericton.
“We continue to do everything we can to encourage more people to choose a career in nursing,” said Miramichi MLA Michelle Conroy in a press release. “Flexibility while studying is important to many students so we are confident that by expanding local possibilities, more people will be able to make that choice.”
Both students and faculty will use virtual reality headsets and software to simulate clinical learning away from the main campus.
UNB president Paul Mazerolle says they goal is to expand the program to more rural communities over the next few years in the hopes that it will help address the nursing shortage across the province.
