New Brunswick has seen a decline in provincial English reading assessments in schools.
New figures show 56.6 per cent of Grade 4 students passed the English reading assessment in the 2022-23 school year.
That was down from 59.5 per cent the previous year (2021-22) and 68.6 per cent the year before that (2020-21).
Grade 6 students saw a success rate of 69.3 per cent. That was down from 71.7 per cent in 2021-22 but up from 69 per cent in 2020-21.
The success rate for Grade 9 students was 80.3 per cent, compared to 81.2 per cent in 2021-22 and 81.8 per cent in 2020-21.
Meanwhile, there were improvements across the board for Grade 10 French reading assessments.
Students who entered French Immersion in Grade 3 had a 78.6 success rate, up from 70.3 per cent.
The success rate for students who entered French Immersion in Grade 6 climbed to 62.5 per cent from 61.3 per cent.
Students who took post-intensive French had a success rate of 52.7 per cent, up from 43.5 per cent.
The province also reported continued improvement in anglophone scientific literacy results.
In the francophone sector, student performance improved in two of the three reading assessments.
Writing results in the French-language sector worsened in Grade 4 but improved in Grade 7.
In francophone sector mathematics, there were slight declines in grades 3 and 8, along with an improvement in Grade 6.
