The Saint John Police Force has launched its Holiday in a Box campaign for the third straight year.
Saint John residents are asked to help fill shoeboxes with essential items targeted toward less fortunate adults.
The campaign was created in 2020 to help people who are struggling to make ends meet and are close to becoming homeless.
“The need and the demand are not diminishing. We are a small city but we have the big city issues and we don’t escape those issues of people who are lost in society a little bit,” police chief Robert Bruce said during Tuesday’s launch.
“We found the city of Saint John has always supported to community and we expect this year to be no different. This simple shoebox makes a big difference in the lives of people who can’t take things for granted like we do.”
Community partners include:
- The Carleton Community Centre
- Crescent Valley Resource Centre
- P.U.L.S.E Inc. Saint John
- The ONE Change Inc.
- The Waterloo Village Neighbourhood Association
Bruce said they hope to surpass last year’s record of 675 holiday boxes donated to community members in need.
They can be dropped off at the Saint John Police Force headquarters before Dec. 13. The community partners will then wrap them into presents and hand them out on Dec. 15.
Saint John police officers will also be at TD Station during the Sea Dogs game on Dec. 9 to collect holiday boxes.
