A mathematics and financial literacy teacher in Saint John wants to break the stigma of talking about money.
Forest Hills School on the city’s east side will host its second annual Financial Literacy Night on Thursday.
The event will focus on different financial skills, making it an event for everyone, from kindergarten to Grade 8 students to their parents.
“The first event was towards kids, but I noticed after the first event when we had a parent conference, every parent was afraid to ask a question that would relate to their bad finances,” said Angela LaRocque.
“It’s crucial for people to understand that everyone, regardless of their income, faces financial challenges, and a high salary doesn’t necessarily equate to financial health.”
Inside the school’s gym and theatre, a local car dealership will show the pros and cons of buying a used or new car, and a dietitian will highlight healthy and budget-friendly recipes
Local banks will be on hand to highlight financial tricks and discuss how to handle credit cards. Two local credit counsellors will also be in attendance.
LaRocque said some students who have found ways to save money will have their poster boards detailing how they did it.
One student created a recycling project and calculated how much she needed to save for a pet and bought herself a dog.
