A group of business improvement associations called Downtowns Atlantic Canada (DAC) has released a research report on Maritime downtowns and the businesses that comprise them.
After the effects of COVID-19, DAC wanted to learn more about the changing profile of its businesses, what they considered to be their greatest challenge and what they viewed as the best opportunity for their downtown or main street to recover.
“This is not just a business issue, it’s a community issue, and we’re so appreciative of everybody at this time of the year being so giving and considerate, supporting their local businesses in everything they’re doing,” said DAC Executive Director Ken Kelly.
Fifteen business improvement associations in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island conducted a census of over 4,300 businesses.
Over 1,700 businesses from the 4,300 surveyed completed the opinion part of the census, revealing the following as their foremost business challenges & opportunities.
Foremost challenges:
- Staffing
- Inflation & Current Economic Conditions
- Parking
- Lack of Foot Traffic/Online Shopping
- Perceived Security & Street Issues
Foremost opportunities:
- District Business Mix
- Parking Innovations
- Marketing Support
- More Events & Programs
- Increased Foot Traffic & Shop Local Programs
“It’s a matter of balancing the two and ensuring the future prosperity and healthiness of these downtowns and main streets,” continued Kelly.
