The West Kent Female Hockey Association (WKFHA) is hosting its 20th annual Blizzard female hockey tournament this week.
The tournament features over 120 teams and 1,800 players and coaching staff from the Maritimes, Quebec and Maine.
Over 200 games are being played in all levels of competition from U7 to U18 age categories.
“Female hockey is getting very popular and year after year, we keep growing. Our association wants to offer opportunities for girls in our region to continue to grow and develop in their favourite sport,” said WKFHA President Denis Ouellette.
“Our association five years ago had two teams across all the age levels. Now we have over 150 girls registered and probably have 12 to 13 teams, ranging from the rec level to the competitive AA level.
“For us, the growth has been exponential, partly because of the exposure we gain from this tournament and the work Hockey Canada does promoting female hockey in the last few years,” Ouellette continued.
The games will be played in Cap-Pelé, Shediac, Cocagne, Bouctouche and Richibucto.
“This tournament wouldn’t be possible without the countless hours dedicated by our tournament’s organizing committee and volunteers,” added Ouellette.
“We got volunteers in the arena to greet the teams, selling merchandise, raffle and 50/50 tickets, all the things that provide that atmosphere so we got 50 or 60 volunteers spread across all of the rinks.”
