An art residency program at the Sunbury Shores Arts and Nature Centre in Saint Andrews allows artists to create and display their portfolios.
Local artist Mellissa Kennedy, whose artwork has appeared in studios across New Brunswick and internationally, will have her handmade materials, including original inks and handmade papers, on display.
Kennedy said she heard about the residency program through a news release, noting Sunbury Shores was always on her radar due to the size of the centre and its location.
“The program itself is two weeks and is supported through the Beaverbrook Canadian Foundation (BCF) and you can choose to travel to the studio. Since I live in Saint John, I decided to live in Saint Andrews,” said Kennedy.
“An application needs to be filled out explaining how the residency will help your career and what style of art you wish to create. You also have to conclude images of your work have explained what you might create and what you’ve created.
“I think residencies are very valuable to offer to any artist, whether it’s some artists just giving them the space and the time dedicated to try projects like this. In other instances, it could connect them with the community or other artists.”
The Sunbury Shores Arts and Nature Centre is located on Water Street. Kennedy is in Saint Andrews until Jan. 21, with a public open studio visit with her taking place Jan. 20 from 10 a.m. until noon.
Sunbury Shores said a second residency program funded by the BCF will take place in April.
