The YMCA of Southwestern New Brunswick launched its annual Strong Communities fundraising campaign on Thursday.
It raises money to ensure everyone has access to various Y programs and services, including licensed child care, youth mental health support, recreational activities, programs for seniors, and health and fitness memberships.
The goal for the 2024 campaign is to raise $2 million, which officials said will have a direct impact on more than 3,500 people throughout the region.
“It’s gonna be quite a year since we’re celebrating our 170th year here in the community, and launching the campaign means so much to us and we hope it means tremendous impact to our community,” said Shilo Boucher, president and CEO of the YMCA of Southwestern New Brunswick.
Part of the money raised will go toward the new outdoor education centre at the Glenn Carpenter Centre, which will provide after-school care and outdoor education year-round.
The 2024 honorary campaign co-chairs are Dale and Wendy Knox, long-time members and supporters of the YMCA and Glenn Carpenter’s legacy.
Wendy’s “Y” story goes back to her childhood when her father, the late Glenn Carpenter, was a dedicated YMCA volunteer, involved in the service club and multiple activities.
Later in life, the Y has remained a part of Wendy and Dale, who have been integral in developing and enhancing the Glenn Carpenter Centre’s journey.
“The Y allows anyone and everyone to participate, just as Glenn had hoped,” Dale explained.
“There are not many communities that have what we have, a facility like the Glenn Carpenter Centre close to the downtown core. It is something that we should celebrate and continue to invest in for future generations.”
About $1.25 million from this year’s campaign will be set aside for the Glenn Carpenter Centre expansion, with the remaining $750,000 going toward Y programs and services.
