No injuries were reported after separate fires at two homeless encampments in Saint John on Sunday evening.
Platoon Chief Josh Hennessy said fire crews were first dispatched to the Courtenay Bay Causeway area shortly before 7:30 p.m.
Hennessy said the first crew that arrived on the scene found flames and requested a second crew for backup.
“No one was around and they extinguished that fire, which was basically debris,” Hennessy said Monday morning.
Shortly after clearing the scene, the platoon chief said another call came in for an outside fire on Exmouth Street.
Hennessy said crews found significant black smoke upon arrival, so two more units were dispatched to the scene.
“There was a tent structure that was fully involved. Crews rapidly deployed handlines to knock down that fire in an attempt to keep it to the tent of origin,” he said.
“They were able to provide exposure protection to the tents surrounding the tent that was on fire and contain it to that single tent.”
Fire officials are still investigating the cause of both blazes, according to Hennessy.
