The Domestic Violence Association of New Brunswick wants residents to know that domestic violence takes many forms and can have far-reaching impacts.
The association, with support from Women and Gender Equality Canada, has launched a new campaign to build understanding and make it easier to seek help.
“Domestic Violence is a Spectrum” will use digital and out-of-home advertisements such as billboards, posters, and public furniture to emphasize that no form of domestic violence is acceptable, and that help is available for all victims.
“Often when people think of domestic violence, they think of things like sexual abuse or physical abuse – but domestic violence can take many different forms: emotional, spiritual, cultural, legal, financial, and more,” says Katey Altman, the association’s coordinator.
“Any form of domestic violence can seriously impact an individual’s health and wellbeing, and there are effects on family members and communities as well.”
In addition to physical and sexual abuse, domestic violence can take the form of emotional, spiritual, cultural, legal and financial abuse, among others.
“Through this campaign, we hope to reduce the number of domestic violence victims who second-guess the severity of their situation,” said association president Alyson Pizzey.
“Often, victims think they should leave available resources to people who have it worse. This simply is not the case. Services and support are available for all victims of domestic violence.”
