Two homeless shelters in Saint John are adding 22 beds for the winter months.
The Outflow Ministry men’s shelter at 162 Waterloo Street has added 16 beds, bringing its total to 46.
It has also created small group accommodations for people recovering from addiction.
“We wanted to create an intentional place for clients who are looking for a path forward, creating an environment stabilization,” said Anthony Dickinson, housing and shelter director of Outflow Ministry.
“We are happy to provide these additional beds in the community and looking forward to helping people as they transition out of homelessness into the next stage of their journey.”
Over at the Coverdale Centre for Women, also on Waterloo Street, an additional six beds have been added, bringing its total capacity to 21.
“We are pleased to assist in adding extra beds to support and address the current needs and gaps for women experiencing homelessness in our community,” said Mary Saulnier-Taylor, executive director of Coverdale Centre for Women.
Mayor Donna Reardon said she is proud of how the service providers, provincial partners, and community volunteers have come together to ensure that no one is left without shelter during these cold months.
“The expansion of these services reflects our values of compassionate leadership and collaboration, and reinforces our identity as a city that may be small in size but is immense in heart,” said Reardon.
