Spring is only a few weeks away on the calendar, but one forecaster says you should not put away your shovels just yet.
Forecasters at The Weather Network released their 2024 spring forecast on Wednesday.
Meteorologist Doug Gillham said the Maritimes should expect an active storm track in March and possibly into April.
“Many of those storms will maybe target Nova Scotia more than New Brunswick, but the storm track should shift a little bit further north,” said Gillham.
“I don’t expect consistent winter weather, but I still expect winter will have some parting punches for us.”
That is not what many people in Nova Scotia may want to hear after being punished by snow this season.
But in New Brunswick, where snow has been hard to find this year, it may come as welcome news.
While the lack of snow in New Brunswick has not been great for winter enthusiasts, Gillham said there is a plus side.
“We don’t have that deep snowpack really anywhere in New Brunswick, so with the spring thaw, we have a much lower risk for flooding,” he said.
Gillham said while the spring season is expected to start off active, they anticipate it will end on a dry note, which does create some concern.
From a temperature perspective, The Weather Network is expecting conditions to be near-normal or slightly above-normal throughout the Maritimes.
“We think those back-and-forth swings in temperature will come close to offsetting each other,” said Gillham.
