The YMCA of Southwestern New Brunswick has announced the recipients of this year’s Red Triangle and Leader to Watch awards.
Julie Dingwell will receive the Red Triangle Award while Laura Oland will be honoured with the Leader to Watch Award.
The Red Triangle Award recognizes long and meritorious service, outstanding contributions and achievement in the community, while the Leader to Watch Award honours an individual who is a role model for other young adults in our community.
Dingwell was chosen for her leadership in Saint John’s social justice realm for over two decades. She transitioned from environmental advocacy to leading Avenue B Harm Reduction in 1999.
The committee said Dingwell’s continued research on HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis C has not only transformed Avenue B into a pillar of harm reduction but also woven a robust social justice fabric across Saint John and beyond.
Oland is being recognized for her work as a volunteer, board member, and advocate. The Y said her impact reverberates throughout Saint John, making her a truly remarkable individual deserving of recognition and praise.
The committee said her role as board secretary for “Just Us” clinical therapy non-profit organization and her participation in various cultural and artistic initiatives underscores her commitment to uplifting others.
“This will send a strong message to the community to get involved, and even the impact that just one person can have in our community is just amazing,” said Shlio Boucher, president of CEO of the YMCA of Southwestern New Brunswick.
Dingwell and Oland will receive their rewards at the 34th annual Red Triangle Award Gala on May 16
Boucher said the funds raised will support the Strong Communities Campaign, ensuring that YMCA programs are accessible to everyone, and the goal is $100,000.
