A scary incident in Cape Breton during a QMJHL game in Sydney.
The Eagles were playing the Saint John Sea Dogs on Saturday night at Centre 200 when a medical incident led to the game being cancelled.
It involved head coach Travis Crickard of the Saint John Sea Dogs, a spokesperson for the team confirmed to our newsroom in an email.
Crickard suffered a “medical emergency” and collapsed behind the bench. He was taken to the Cape Breton Regional Hospital for further evaluation and was released on Sunday morning.
“What happened last night was scary and the outpouring of support and concern for Travis has meant a lot to him and the team,” the Sea Dogs said in a statement Sunday afternoon.
“He and the team would like to thank those at Centre 200 who responded so quickly, and the emergency medical professionals, led by Dr. R.J. MacKenzie, who tended to him.”
Cape Breton was leading 6-0 early in the third period when play was stopped.
Players and officials were sent to the dressing room and the league ultimately decided to stop the game.
