100 Women Who Care of Greater Saint John has made its latest donation to a local charity in the city.
Hestia House received a cheque for $25,300 on Tuesday night from the group of generous women.
It was the second time the charity, which provides shelter and support for abused women and their children, had been selected.
Every three months, the women hear presentations from three local charitable organizations and then vote on which one to donate to. Each woman who attends the meeting writes a cheque for $100 to the winning charity.
Hestia House, which provides shelter and support for abused women and their children, was a previous winner of $24,500 in June 2015.
P.R.O. Kids and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Saint John also made presentations to the women on Tuesday night.
100 Women Who Care also heard from L’Arche Saint John, which received a donation of $27,400 in December.
The money is being used to support L’Arche Connects, a six-month program that was launched in January.
It is a weekly event designed for adults with intellectual disabilities and their parents or caregivers who are interested in steps toward independent or alternative living options outside of their nuclear family home.
“It’s important to us to host a program like this in a dignified and beautiful venue, to reflect the dignity of the people in front of us as full citizens of the city,” said Executive Director Rachel Vander Vennen.
The local chapter of 100 Women Who Care has donated more than $1.1 million to more than 40 local charities since its inception in 2013.
