Saint John’s mayor is adding her voice to the conversation after this week’s fatal encampment fire.
Police said two people were found dead after a fire on Paradise Row near Somerset Street on Monday afternoon.
Donna Reardon said the tragedy highlights the pressing issue of homelessness in the community.
“It is a stark reminder that we must come together to find lasting solutions so that no one in Saint John has to endure homelessness,” Reardon said in a statement.
“I understand that many of you are feeling frustrated and saddened by the pace of change and the impact this crisis is having on our community.
“Please know that your feelings are completely justified, and I am committed to listening and incorporating your voices into our collective efforts to make a difference.”
The mayor said the city is dedicated to tackling the housing crisis head-on, together with frontline agencies and partners, and is confident this can be done.
Reardon went on to send her thoughts and sympathies to the friends and families of those impacted, as well as acknowledge the first responders who were at the scene.
“My thoughts are with every single one of you as we navigate these trying times together.”
