Low-income seniors and those on fixed incomes can now apply for an annual government benefit.
The 2024 Low-Income Seniors’ Benefit allows eligible New Brunswickers to receive $600 from the province.
The one-time payment used to be $400, but the province moved to increase it by 50 per cent as of April 1.
“More than 44,000 seniors across the province benefit from this program, and I am pleased this initiative ensures they can access assistance right away,” Kathy Bockus, the minister responsible for seniors, said in a news release.
To qualify, you must be at least 60 years old and receive one of three federal benefits under the Old Age Security Act.
They include the Guaranteed Income Supplement, Allowance Program, or Allowance for the Survivor Program.
Only one benefit will be issued per household, but if spouses live separately — such as one residing in a nursing home — then both will be eligible.
Applications will be accepted until Dec. 31. The province said it expects to spend $28 million on this program.
