April is tax season, and a lot of New Brunswickers find it challenging to file.
Through the Community Volunteer Income Tax Program (CVITP), community organizations host free tax clinics where volunteers complete tax returns for those with a modest income and a simple tax situation.
Natasha Brewer, a spokesperson with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), said more than 27,000 residents used volunteer clinics last year, bringing in over $66 million in refunded and benefited entitlements to those people.
She said 81 volunteer clinics in the province allow walk-ins, drop-offs, or appointments, and filing your taxes before the April 30 deadline can get you benefits such as the Canada Child Benefit or the GST Credit.
“We do have a number of volunteers already set up, but if there are individuals who are interested in participating in a volunteer capacity or even as a participating organization, we definitely encourage them to reach out to us and we can have those discussions and match them up,” said Brewer.

Filing your income taxes late can lead to paying interest, fees, or penalties.
