For southern New Brunswick residents looking for a career change, the Canadian Coast Guard (CCG) will hold an open house in Saint John this weekend.
Gary Ivany, the assistant commissioner of the Atlantic Region, says the open house takes place on McIlveen Drive from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday.
Ivany says the free family-friendly event will include vessel and helicopter tours, demonstrations, and interactive activities and displays.
“We’re really looking to provide opportunities for people to understand what the Coast Guard could provide for them when it comes to futures as well,” said Ivany.
He says more than 2,400 people are employed in the CCG Atlantic Region, with more than 4,500 working in the central, western, and Arctic regions.
Ivany says anyone who wants to join the CCG can attend the Canadian Coast Guard College in Westmount, N.S. The four years of study will blend classroom learning, simulation and practical training with time at sea for officer cadets.
Other careers the CCG offers include cooks, mechanics, and biologists.
