A multimodal transportation and distribution park is being explored for the Saint John region.
Envision Saint John announced Monday that it has hired Deloitte to conduct a feasibility study.
“The development of this new park is an opportunity that only comes along once in a generation,” CEO Andrew Beckett said in a news release.
“Envision Saint John is leading the charge on this project because it’s our job to expedite growth by always keeping an eye on the bigger picture.”
The agency received a combined $200,000 from the federal and provincial governments to help with the study.
Saint John-Rothesay MP Wayne Long said effective supply chain access and transportation to markets that are cost-competitive, dependable, and efficient is critically important for New Brunswick businesses.
“As we invest in projects that assess our region’s strategic location and infrastructure, we position ourselves to create new opportunities for economic growth,” said Long in the release.
Réjean Savoie, minister responsible for the Regional Development Corporation, said this study is an important step in understanding what type of investment is needed and how best to pursue this opportunity.
“The development of infrastructure like a multimodal park will support growth in the Saint John Region as well as the entire province,” said Savoie.
Officials believe the recent investments at Port Saint John, combined with its proximity to the Canada-U.S. border, will make a strong business case for a potential multimodal park.
Over the next couple of months, Deloitte will conduct exploratory research, develop a roadmap, identify suitable locations, and detail timelines.
They will also assess existing infrastructure, outline required investments, and will help paint a clearer picture of its economic benefits.
The project’s business plan is expected to be completed before the end of the year.
