New Brunswick RCMP are warning residents against taking matters into their own hands.
Mounties have seen a rise in vigilantism, particularly in the Greater Moncton region.
Police said they are aware of individuals posing as children to entice people into committing crimes.
Sgt. Stéphane Esculier said it risks compromising ongoing police investigations and puts individuals at risk of serious injury or worse.
In an interview with our newsroom, Esculier strongly discouraged people from taking matters into their own hands.
“There’s a lot of background work that needs to be done before a person is able to be arrested and brought before the courts,” said Esculier.
Esculier states the RCMP understand residents might only sometimes be aware of all the work they are doing but want residents to know that they are working diligently every day to ensure the safety of New Brunswick children.
The RCMP’s Internet Child Exploitation Unit, Digital Forensic Section, Major Crime Unit, Further Investigation Team, and General Investigation Section are just some of the specialized units and teams that carry out investigations related to child exploitation.
