New Brunswickers who have a passion for railways can view the one-of-a-kind RAILFest.
The railway show begins on Saturday and continues until New Brunswick Day, with model railroads made entirely of Lego bricks.
The exhibits are designed in the style of railroads from the late 1800s to early 1900s, taking up 220 square feet and containing over 100,000 bricks.
The event takes place at Sir William Van Horne’s former summer estate on Ministers Island. Van Horne was the second president of the Canadian Pacific Railway and played a key role in the country’s first transcontinental railroad.
Michael Meagher, estate marketing and event manager, said the model railroad exhibit has been designed and built by an official Lego users group called the Maritime Lego User Group (MariLUG).
However, visitors are encouraged to build their creations to add to the exhibit. Every day, RAILFest judges will select one or more creations to add to the railroad display.
After the exhibition, the judges will select four grand prize creations from the daily winners. Each grand prize winner receives a $250 Lego model railroad kit.
“It’s a combination of history, fun, and something that we think is going to be a hit not only for adults but for kids as well,” said Meagher.
RAILFest access is included in the Island Day Pass, which costs $16 to $18. Apart from RAILFest, visitors can explore estate buildings and hike trails on the island.
The island’s open hours vary daily due to tides. Further details can be found by clicking here.
