Around 80,000 tourists will descend on Sussex for the 37th Atlantic Balloon Fiesta from Sept. 6 to 8.
Alannah Pearson, the pilot coordinator, said the fiesta was created in 1985 when several residents were allowed to extend the local tourist season by hosting a hot air balloon event.
Local pilots were aware of the excellent flying in the Sussex area, so it was suggested that the Sussex Balloon Festival Inc. be established. Balloonists were invited to the area for a weekend, and while it was somewhat informal, it would become the first Atlantic Balloon Fiesta.
“We’ve got about 28 or 29 balloons coming to the fiesta this year. A few new shapes that have never been before so that’s always exciting, and of course, some of our friends that have been coming for years and years,” said Pearson.
The balloons will launch from Princess Louise Park and land in the surrounding area. Launch times are approximately 6:30 a.m. and 6 p.m., with registration required at least one hour before launch.
Pearson said other activities will also be available, including a horse show, touch-a-truck, indoor market, and live music. There will also be up to 500 vehicles registered for the car show and shine.
She also reminded the public that drones are prohibited under Transport Canada regulations. The festival area is closed airspace for the duration of the festival, including special licenses.
Dog owners are asked to leave their pets at home, with the exception of service animals, due to the crowded space and loud noise.
Parking can be found at Mrs. Dunster’s, O’Connell Park, 8th Hussars Armouries, Sussex Regional High School, and the Sussex Sharing Club.
