Another entangled North Atlantic right whale has been spotted in the southern Gulf of St. Lawrence.
Fisheries and Oceans Canada says the whale was spotted east of New Brunswick’s Acadian Peninsula on Saturday.
It was observed by a Canadian Whale Institute/New England Aquarium survey vessel team.
The entangled whale has been confirmed as Neptune, a 21-year-old male.
A subsequent flight did not spot Neptune or Dropcloth, an entangled whale last seen on July 27.
“Weather permitting, additional flights will be scheduled to try to resight either whale,” the department said in a news release.
“If the whale is located again, and weather and sea conditions allow, efforts will be made to attempt disentanglement.”
Officials do not yet know the type of gear he is entangled in or where it came from. That is typically only confirmed after investigation and when gear is removed from an animal, when possible.
