A Sussex student has 100,000 reasons to celebrate as she heads off to university in the fall.
Sewa Ofurune has been named one of 10 annual recipients of the Ted Rogers Legacy Scholarship.
She will receive a total of $100,000 over four years while she studies computer science at the University of New Brunswick.
Ofurune, who moved from Nigeria to New Brunswick with her family three years ago, said this news felt like winning the lottery.
“My parents both have graduate degrees from Nigeria but haven’t been able to get work in their field yet in Canada,” said Ofurune.
“Receiving the Ted Rogers Legacy Scholarship has lifted a financial burden from us, and it means I won’t have to rely on student loans to pursue my dream of studying computer science and cybersecurity to make the world a safer place.”
Ofurune plans to focus her degree on cybersecurity to help protect youth and seniors online.
The Ted Rogers Legacy Scholarship is provided by Rogers Communications and awarded to students in a STEM-focused program to support their tuition and living expenses.
Ofurune, who graduated from Sussex Regional High School in June, was recognized for her academic excellence and volunteerism in the community.
