New Brunswick will play host to The Royal Canadian Legion’s 49th Dominion Convention from Saturday through Wednesday.
The biannual event will see 1,000 delegates and proxies representing nearly 260,000 members meet in Saint John to discuss the legion’s future.
Delegates will vote on resolutions, determine national policies and elect the next dominion president and senior elected officers.
Dominion President Bruce Julian said this year’s theme, Building our Future on a Foundation of Strength, is a way to honour past accomplishments but also serves as a motivating call to action for the challenges that await the legion.
“It’s going to be a good convention. I think everybody is looking forward to getting together again and talking about what’s in store for The Royal Canadian Legion and how we can make it better,” said Julian.
The Dominion Convention was last held in New Brunswick in 1928, just two years after the legion was formed.
On Sunday, the convention will host a special ceremony to pay tribute to veterans and remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.
The public is invited to view the parade on the sidewalks around Market Square, where the parade will kick off at 10 a.m., proceeding down Prince William Street and Water Street.
Although the convention is primarily designed for legion members and their guests, Julian said it is also accessible to observers.
