More street closures and detours due to a major street reconstruction project in uptown Saint John.
Charlotte Street is currently closed to through traffic between Union Street and King Street as part of phase two of the project.
Starting on Thursday, the closure will extend to include the stretch between King Street and King Square South.
King Street will also be closed to through traffic and parking from Germain Street to Charlotte Street.
“Access to properties and businesses inside the closed section will be maintained,” the city said in a news release.
“Through traffic will be detoured around this section of Charlotte Street and King Street. Flaggers will be on site to direct local traffic.”
City officials said the closure, which is expected to last for eight weeks, is necessary for road repairs and reconstruction.
Crews are also installing new curb, sidewalks, brick medians, street lighting and underground storm sewer.
Phase two of the project has also meant changes to Saint John Transit. Buses are not able to service stops at King’s Square North, King Street, Charlotte Street or city hall at the bottom of King Street.
As a result, temporary stops are set up at two locations — one on Water Street and another on King Street East.
