Hundreds of firefighters from across the Maritimes are expected in Saint John this week.
The city is hosting the International Day of Mourning ceremony on Wednesday evening.
Capt. Joe Voutour said it is the first time the event has taken place since before the pandemic.
“Our ceremony is to commemorate firefighters that have lost their lives in the line of duty or as a result of workplace sicknesses,” Voutour told our newsroom.
Two Saint John firefighters who have died since the last ceremony was held will also be commemorated.
Lt. Daniel Finnigan died of a rare blood cancer in July 2019 while Capt. Karl Conrad died of bladder cancer in June 2021.
The annual ceremony rotates between Saint John, Moncton and Fredericton each year, according to Voutour.
He expects more than 200 firefighters from New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island will be in attendance.
A memorial parade will take place from the Saint John Firefighters Museum on Sydney Street to “The Bell Monument” in King’s Square beginning at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.
It will be followed by a private reception for invited guests at the firefighters’ museum.
