The Elsipogtog First Nation is calling for a “thorough investigation” into this weekend’s fatal shooting.
A man allegedly threatening to harm himself was shot and killed by an RCMP officer on Sunday evening.
Police have said the man was carrying a weapon and refused to comply with officers. Another officer fired their taser before the shooting, but investigators say it was ineffective.
“We are doing everything in our power to ensure that a thorough investigation is conducted and that proper justice is served,” the community said in a Facebook post.
“We are doing our best to gather information and understand what transpired. There are limited details available at this time, but please be assured that immediate action is being taken.”
The officer has been removed from the community, said the post, and the Serious Incident Response Team is investigating.
Meanwhile, Liberal Leader Susan Holt took to social media to express her condolences to the man’s family.
“It is inexplicable that a wellness check ends like this, much less for the third time in our province in only the past few years,” said Holt.
“It’s clear that mental health supports in this province are broken.”
Chantel Moore was shot and killed by an Edmundston Police Force officer during a wellness check in June 2020.
Eight days later, in the community of Metepenagiag First Nation, Rodney Levi was shot and killed by an RCMP officer.
