The provincial government put out a request on Tuesday for proposals aimed at setting up and running a 50-bed facility dedicated to therapeutic addiction treatment for adults.
“We know there is an increasing need to support individuals with complex substance use concerns,” said Sherry Wilson, the minister responsible for addictions and mental health services.
“This announcement is a first step in providing more support to these individuals by expanding the province’s rehabilitation services and addressing the gap in bed-based treatment options.”
Officials stated the center would adopt the therapeutic community approach, a comprehensive bed-based treatment for addiction that emphasizes treating the individual as a whole and fostering significant lifestyle changes.
Applicants are also asked to suggest the center’s location in their proposal.
This community-oriented environment encourages individuals to confront and share their vulnerabilities, a crucial aspect of the recovery journey.
Residents may stay for a duration ranging from six to 24 months. This initiative is also in line with the goals outlined in the Department of Health’s five-year plan for addiction and mental health.
This announcement builds on last year’s initiative that introduced 10 new treatment beds at two addiction and mental health programs overseen by regional health authorities.
Ridgewood Addiction Services in Saint John currently accommodates 16 beds, while Campbellton’s newly established live-in service features 18 treatment beds and six beds for withdrawal management.
Additionally, the Horizon Recovery Centre, situated at Ridgewood, provides 14 transitional beds for individuals needing stabilization and support as they work on their community reintegration plans.
