On Saturday, New Brunswick’s Liberal party declared their commitment to launching major efforts to enhance the availability of affordable housing within the province.
“We will eliminate the 10% provincial sales tax on multi-unit housing construction. This will spur the development of more housing projects throughout the province,” said Leader Susan Holt.
Both Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island have adopted this policy. In terms of per capita, these two adjacent provinces have significantly outpaced New Brunswick, more than doubling their rate of new construction.
Holt also mentioned that her government plans to partner with New Brunswick firms to develop modular and off-site homes, intending to create 30,000 new housing units.
“The Higgs government has been dragging its feet for far too long, leaving people in precarious housing situations. Our population is growing, and we welcome that, but it can’t happen without a solid plan to tackle the housing shortage,
“The price of rent and home ownership is skyrocketing because Higgs doesn’t have a plan to build more homes. We will stabilize prices and ensure more New Brunswickers have access to the affordable and available housing they need,” concluded Holt.
