The eastern-most section of the Coastal Link Trail, spanning from St. Stephen to Saint John, will soon be complete.
Officials in Saint John recently announced that 2.2 kilometres of bike lanes are being installed along Ocean Westway, in partnership with the Southwest New Brunswick Service Commission.
They will connect to an off-road trail in Spruce Lake, existing bike lanes on Manawagonish Road, and portions of the Trans Canada Trail to Rockwood Park.
“Saint John’s portion of the Trail is recommended in the City’s Transportation Plan, MoveSJ, and will create yet another continuous active transportation route through the city,” Public Works Director Tim O’Reilly said in a news release.
“It will contribute to Saint John’s goal of reaching 20 per cent of commuter trips being achieved by sustainable transportation modes and we are grateful to all the partners who are helping us achieve this.”
The Coastal Link Trail is a 171-kilometre trail stretching from the Canada/U.S. border at St. Stephen to Rockwood Park in Saint John.
Various portions of the trail are constructed to date with a plan for it to be completed by 2027.
Construction of this latest portion of the trail is funded by the province, the federal government and Trans Canada Trail. The city will be responsible for maintaining the on-street bike lanes on Ocean Westway to Rockwood Park.
