You will start seeing savings on your electricity bill once the new year arrives.
A 10 per cent rebate will be applied to eligible residential bills starting in January.
The Liberals had promised to scrap the provincial portion of the HST on power bills during the election.
However, they say offering a rebate for a similar amount will return money to New Brunswickers sooner.
“Our government understands that people are struggling with the rising cost of almost everything, including power bills,” Premier Susan Holt said in a news release.
“With energy costs continuing to climb, we are providing affordability relief that will ensure New Brunswickers can stay warm this winter.”
We are also getting a better idea of how much revenue the New Brunswick government will lose due to the rebate.
Officials said the program will cost around $32 million in the current fiscal year and $93 million each year after that.
The government is working with NB Power, Saint John Energy, Edmundston Energy and the Perth-Andover Electric Light Commission to administer the rebate.
It will be displayed on electricity bills as “GNB 10% rebate,” the government said in the news release.
