The Horizon Health Network is taking steps to help hospitals handle the busy holiday season.
It announced 80 more acute care beds at several hospitals to ensure healthcare services run smoothly.
Margaret Melanson, president and CEO of Horizon, explains these proactive steps aim to meet the healthcare needs of New Brunswickers.
“This is often a very difficult time of year for our healthcare teams and the communities we serve,” she said.
Key actions include:
- Expanding bed capacity at The Moncton Hospital by renovating a clinic area.
- Maintaining service levels at urgent care centres, community health centres, and mental health services.
- Renovating the former ambulance bay at Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital to create more space for stable patients.
- Partnering with Mount St. Joseph Nursing Home in Miramichi to open new beds for patients awaiting nursing home placements.
- Additional acute care beds at the Saint John Regional Hospital, Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital and Miramichi Regional Hospital.
Horizon Health is ensuring that its urgent care centres, community health centres and mental health services will continue to operate at their usual capacity.
This includes providing immediate support for mental health care and crisis response.
Melanson reminded the public to be kind to hospital staff during the holiday season.
“Many of our incredible physicians, nurses and staff will be spending time away from their loved ones to ensure care is available to those who need it,” she said
Melanson recommended exploring other care options, such as visiting walk-in clinics, consulting pharmacists, or booking virtual appointments, to help reduce pressure on emergency departments.
