Two universities are getting provincial help to develop long-term strategies for student housing.
The University of New Brunswick and the Université de Moncton will receive more than $1.1 million.
“Working with universities and colleges to develop long-term strategies for student housing is an important part of the government’s mandate,” Jean-Claude D’Amours, acting minister of post-secondary education, said in a news release.
“This funding will help the Université de Moncton and UNB determine their student housing needs and costs related to constructing and operating new residences.”
The Université de Moncton will receive nearly $569,000, while UNB will get more than $555,000 from the provincial government.
Denis Prud’homme, president and vice-chancellor of the Université de Moncton, said the money is dedicated to conducting a feasibility study for new student residences.
“This important contribution will enable us to do an in-depth analysis of the housing needs on our three campuses in Edmundston, Moncton and Shippagan, and to propose affordable solutions to support the success of our students,” said Prud’homme.
Paul Mazerolle, president and vice-chancellor at UNB, said the money will allow them to explore the best ways to create viable and affordable student housing in Saint John and Fredericton.
