A 33-year-old Saint John man has been sentenced to six and a half years in prison after being found guilty of child pornography-related offences.
The sentencing occurred last Thursday in court, marking the culmination of a years-long investigation led by law enforcement.
The investigation began in November 2020 when information about potential offences was provided to authorities.
In February 2023, police executed a search warrant at a home on Belgian Road in Saint John.
Several electronic devices were seized, and the man was arrested at the scene. He was later released on conditions while awaiting court proceedings.
In May 2023, charges of possession and transmission of child pornography were laid against the man.
He later pleaded guilty to these charges, as well as breaching conditions, in August 2024.
Additional charges were brought against him in October 2024 after police discovered further evidence during a search of a cellphone seized during his arrest.
During the accused’s sentencing last Thursday, the court ordered the man to register with the National Sex Offender Registry for 20 years and provide a DNA sample.
Police say he will also face long-term restrictions after his release, including restrictions on communication with minors and attendance at locations frequented by individuals under 16 years old, for 10 years.
