A 20-year-old man has been charged after a police officer and a bystander were allegedly assaulted in Saint John.
It all started around 12:30 a.m. Friday, when police responded to a call in the city’s north end.
A man approached the officer and said he had been assaulted by a man known to him.
An officer located the suspect on the Wall Street overpass with another man.
“As the officer approached the suspect to arrest him, he lunged towards the bridge railing,” police said in a news release.
The officer and the bystander were able to stop him, but that is when the suspect allegedly tackled the officer and began assaulting them.
The suspect was pulled off the officer by the bystander and quickly taken into custody by other responding officers.
Police said both the officer and the bystander sustained injuries and are recovering at this time.
“The Saint John Police would like to commend the bystander for the immediate assistance given to our officer during this dangerous altercation,” said the release.
The accused is charged with assaulting a peace officer, assault causing bodily harm, attempt to disarm a peace officer, probation violation and obstruction of a peace officer.
He has been remanded into custody for an assessment and is due back in court on May 26.
