A new addition on the roof of the Legislative departmental building in Fredericton.
Beehives have been installed in honour of World Bee Day on May 20.
This initiative is the result of collaboration between Health Minister John Dornan and Francine Landry, Speaker of the legislature.
Dornan is a hobby beekeeper who has offered two of his own hives to promote pollination.
About 50,000 bees live in the hives. In the fall, the honey will be produced and be bottled and labelled as Speaker’s Honey.
The jars of harvested honey will then be offered as gifts to dignitaries and ambassadors visiting the legislative assembly. It will also be made available to food banks or charitable organizations.
Those visiting the legislative assembly will begin to view the activity around the hives from a kiosk at the entrance.
