It has been 40 years since the Canada Games Aquatic Centre in Saint John was constructed for the 1985 Canada Summer Games.
Now, the facility is planning for $25 million in upgrades to prepare it for the 2029 Canada Summer Games and future generations.
Saint John and Moncton will co-host the Games, which are expected to generate millions in economic spinoff for the region.
“This project is a regional investment to modernize the facility, enhance energy efficiency and improve accessibility and spectator experience,” the city said in a news release.
“As the only 50-metre pool in New Brunswick, these upgrades will benefit local users of the facility and help to attract future competitions and events, for years to come.”
Both the 50-metre competition pool and the warm-up pool will see enhancements, and the pool deck and finishes will be modernized.
The change rooms will also be fully renovated, spectator seating will be expanded and there will be a new accessible entryway.
Work will also include mechanical and electrical upgrades, a boiler replacement and exterior cladding, and energy-efficient systems with the goal of being carbon neutral by 2029.
Design work and a request for proposals will take place over the coming months, followed by final design and funding confirmations in 2026.
Construction and phased upgrades will occur in 2027 and 2028, with the final commissioning in 2029 ahead of the Canada Summer Games.
Information sessions will be announced as the project moves forward for the community and partners.
