Fredericton police say no charges will be laid after a triple fatal crash in the city more than a year ago.
Officers tried to stop a vehicle travelling at a “high rate of speed” during the early morning hours of May 5, 2024.
Shortly after, they were dispatched to a crash in the 700 block of Douglas Avenue on the city’s north side involving the same vehicle.
The vehicle is believed to have struck a curb before going airborne, colliding with a tree, and then hitting a parked vehicle.
Three people inside the vehicle were killed, including a 22-year-old man, a 17-year-old boy, and a 14-year-old girl.
A 15-year-old boy was airlifted to the IWK Health Centre in Halifax with critical injuries. A 14-year-old girl was also treated for injuries.
Police said in an update on Monday that they have since determined the driver of the vehicle was one of three people who died.
“In accordance with the provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act, the late individual cannot be publicly identified,” said the update. As a result of these findings, no charges will be laid in this matter.”
Investigators said the investigation to determine who was driving the vehicle included laboratory analysis and DNA testing.
“Fredericton Police Force investigators have worked closely with the affected families throughout the past year and extend our deepest condolences for their loss,” said police.
“We would like to thank them for their cooperation during the investigation, and we also thank the community for its ongoing support in response to this tragic accident.”
