Saint John Water has provided guidelines to help reduce wildfire risks around the Loch Lomond Watershed.
The group stresses that the forest surrounding the watershed is key to safeguarding the city’s drinking water.
They’re encouraging everyone to play their part by taking various safety steps:
- Remove dead or dry trees that can serve as fuel for wildfires.
- Check the NB Forest Fire Watch before burning any materials.
- Burn yard waste during winter or when conditions are wet to reduce the risk of stray embers starting fires.
- Exercise caution with open fires during dry or windy weather conditions.
- Use metal screens on firepits to help catch stray embers.
- Make sure campfires and firepits are completely extinguished when you’re finished.
- Mow tall, dry grass around your home to help prevent the spread of fires.
- Plant green leafy hardwoods around your property, as they are more fire-resistant than softwood evergreens.
- Carry a fire extinguisher during recreational vehicle or ATV use, as vehicle fires can potentially trigger forest fires.
- When planning fireworks displays, check wind direction, aim them away from your home and nearby woods, and soak discharged or misfired fireworks in water before disposal.
- Be FireSmart by creating a safe zone around your home, shed, garage, or barn.
The organization provided these steps to protect both private properties and the watershed, and additional details, along with a complete list of tips, are available for those interested.
Saint John Water is also replanting vulnerable areas of the forest to boost its natural fire resistance.
