2025 has the potential to be the second worst wildfire season in Canada on record…just after 2023.
Tim Hodgson is Canada’s Natural Resources Minister and says the country is already off to an alarming start.
“While the evacuations have been completed successfully, it is very clear this wildfire season is off to a very challenging start,” Hodgson told a press conference for an update on the wildfire situation in Canada.
“More than 3.7 million hectares have been burned, and wildfire smoke is affecting air quality across the country.”
Hodgson adds that the forecast for the rest of this year, including this summer, is favorable for more forest fire activity.
“Wildfire risk across most of western and northern Canada is expected to be elevated. While increased rainfall in the latter half of June could reduce the risk of new fires igniting, high fire risks are expected to return in July and likely persist through August.”
Right now, there are 225 active forest fires, with 121 considered out of control.
Also, there are 241 international fire fighters battling Canada’s wildfires, mostly from the United State and Australia.
