Dozens of drivers in Saint John were ticketed during a recent distracted driving campaign.
Saint John police said they issued a total of 29 traffic violations under the Motor Vehicle Act.
The four-day traffic enforcement campaign ran from Monday to Thursday of this week.
It focused on enforcing distracted driving legislation and educating drivers about the dangers of not paying attention.
Transport Canada said the risk of a collision goes up when a driver’s eyes are taken off the road, even for a second.
“This is because distraction impairs performance and reduces a driver’s awareness,” said the federal agency.
“It makes drivers slower to notice and less able to safely respond to critical events on the road. Or they may miss them entirely.”
According to Transport Canada data, distracted driving contributed to an estimated 22.5 per cent of fatal collisions and 25.5 per cent of serious injury collisions in 2021.
In New Brunswick, drivers convicted of a distracted driving offence will be fined $340.50 and lose five demerit points from their licence.
