A routine traffic stop in Charlotte County over the weekend turned into a pursuit with a wanted man.
Mounties said they stopped a rental van on McCarthy’s Point Road in Pocologan around 12:30 a.m. Sunday.
Officers learned the driver had an outstanding arrest warrant for assaulting a police officer and was prohibited from driving in Canada.
“When the police officer notified the man of his arrest, the driver resisted and drove off, almost hitting the officer,” Mounties said in a news release on Tuesday.
“The man continued to drive in a reckless and careless manner into oncoming traffic, and police initiated a pursuit out of concern for public safety.”
Police said the driver turned onto Seven Mile Lake Road shortly after and eventually lost control of his vehicle.
He allegedly fled the scene on foot but was quickly arrested and taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
A 37-year-old man from Saint John has been charged with assaulting a police officer with a weapon, flight from police, resisting arrest, prohibited driving and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.
He was remanded into custody pending a future court appearance.
